In 1975, General Motors executive John Delorean created the Delorean Motor Company, headquarted in Detroit. Its first and only car was made of a stainless steel body and had an attractive set of gull wing doors.

It would also appear in the popular movie Back to the Future. However, the car failed to sell well and would mark the start of poor auto production in Detroit. It was heavy, expensive, not customizable, and all-around impractical. The lack of sales pressured Delorean, and he turned toward drug trafficking to raise money. Although caught, Delorean was acquitted and the company filed for bankruptcy in 1982. It was a huge failure.
